Chapter 1 of 3
A lake inside the ice
Lake Viverone was born of the ice: it lies within the Ivrea morainic amphitheatre, at 230 metres, three and a half kilometres long and up to fifty deep. It is shared between Viverone, on the Biella shore, and Azeglio, on the Turin shore.

The houses the lake has kept
The lake hides a geometry that the surface gives no hint of. At the archaeological site VI.1–Emissario, between Viverone and Azeglio, about five thousand piles driven into the bed have been identified, making it possible to reconstruct the layout of a Bronze Age village, with a circular plan about seventy metres across. The surviving wood allows the spaces to be studied; the bronze objects help reconstruct clothing and weapons. The relationship between the huts and the water is still being studied through the analysis of the sediments.

A hidden presence
Since 2011 this site has belonged to the UNESCO serial property of prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps: the recognition covers the archaeological asset identified and its protection system, not every part of the lake. Viverone has about 1,330 inhabitants, with the hamlets of Bertignano, Comuna, Masseria, Rolle and Veneria.
