Cossato and the Lessona

The province's second-largest municipality, its textile history, and on the hills a Nebbiolo that grows on the sand of an ancient sea.

Chapter 1 of 4

One hill, many lives

Cossato, about 13,850 inhabitants, is the second-largest municipality in the province. It grew on the road between Biella, the plain and the Valle Strona, and the Strona stream runs through it from north to south. It has a textile history and a station on the Biella–Novara line. At Castellengo, on the hill, the castle stands at the edge of the Baragge. In town, along the Strona, Villa Ranzoni preserves different phases of its history: the core probably dates from before 1722, while the facades were probably unified in the early twentieth century.

Saints Peter and Paul

At the foot of the castle, the church of Saints Peter and Paul, already mentioned in a bull of 1155, began with a single nave and was enlarged at different times. Inside, the paintings signed by Daniele De Bosis in 1496 and those attributed to his workshop, dated 1515, give depth to a building that from the outside does not reveal all its past at once.

Santa Maria Assunta, in the heart of the town

In town, the church of Santa Maria Assunta has ancient origins, before the year 1000, and was rebuilt in 1614: today its ochre-coloured porticoed façade bears the date MCMXXIII under the pediment, and beside it rises the bell tower with its clock. The Strona stream runs through Cossato from north to south, and it is along its course that the town has grown. Cossato is also the town of our agency.

The sea beneath the vines

A few kilometres away, at Lessona, the past also lies underfoot: the Nebbiolo grows on ancient marine sediments, acidic reddish sands resting on porphyry. Lessona wine was already famous in the 17th century, and the Archivio di Stato di Biella records the sale of a vineyard in 1436. The DOC dates from 1976 (decree of 3 December 1976, published in 1977) and coincides with the municipal territory.
