Riva

One of the oldest districts of the lowland city, where a small church with an octagonal dome and a brewery keep the memory of the neighbourhood.

Chapter 1 of 4

A climb, a district

Roman remains have been found at Riva. The district sits tightly between Cossila, to the north, and the Cervo, to the east; via Italia crosses it, and its climbs and slopes hold it together: salita di Riva, costa di Riva, via Scaglia, where a medieval tower can only be seen from above. Salita di Riva, costa di Riva and via Scaglia trace a route between the plain and the first heights of the city.

The squares

Around piazza San Giovanni Bosco, the old piazza del Gallo, stand San Cassiano and the stone marker commemorating the shooting of December 1943. A little further on is piazza Martiri della Libertà, with the Teatro Villani and the monument to Quintino Sella.

The little church of San Giuseppe

A small church holds a story gathered in a small space. The core of the church of San Giuseppe dates from 1644 and has an octagonal dome; inside its short space, life-size polychrome terracotta figures show the death of Joseph: a domestic episode, given over to devotion and made visible as a scene.

Chapter 4 of 4

The factory that remained

A little further on, time takes the form of work. The business that would become Menabrea began in 1846 on the initiative of Welf and the Caraccio brothers. The name we know today arrives in 1854, when Giuseppe Menabrea and Antonio Zimmermann lease the brewery; the purchase follows in 1864. The continuity of the production site lets you recognise, within today's city, the persistence of an industrial history.
