The valley of the stonecutters
The Valle Cervo climbs from Andorno to Piedicavallo, beneath Monte Bo, at 2,556 metres. It is the valley of the stonecutters: the stone is syenite, a rock similar to granite, and its men left to work it far away. In 1862 technical schools for the building trades were founded at Campiglia Cervo, to give a trade to those who emigrated.

Those who left, those who kept the home alive
A house can also tell of an absence. While many men left to work far away, the women stayed to look after the house, the livestock and the meadows: the Casa Museo dell'Alta Valle del Cervo recalls their role, alongside that of the emigrants.

Rosazza and Piedicavallo
At Rosazza, with fewer than a hundred inhabitants at 882 metres, from 1883 Senator Federico Rosazza Pistolet, with the architect Giuseppe Maffei, transformed the village: the castle with its Guelph tower, the town hall and the 367-metre tunnel, opened in 1897, that leads towards Oropa. At the head of the valley is Piedicavallo, with a community theatre and the Ponte della Coda, swept away by the flood of 2020 and rebuilt in 2022.
