The Baraggia

An open landscape between the plain and the Prealps, shaped over centuries by grazing and water, next to the paddies of a PDO rice.

Chapter 1 of 3

Open land and its choices

In the Baraggia the eye meets grasses, widely spaced trees and large expanses of sky: dense heath of bracken and heather, alternating with wide meadows, on a plateau between 150 and 340 metres. This openness can suggest a land left untouched. Its history, though, is also a human one: the land was long contested between pasture and crops. Since 1992 it has been a nature reserve, almost four thousand hectares across the provinces of Biella, Vercelli and Novara.

Chapter 2 of 3

Water and rice

The name Baraggia refers both to the protected patches of heath and to the wider district in which rice growing developed. According to a historical account of Baraggia rice, in 1730 a ducal decree limited the spread of rice in the Basso Biellese to protect pasture: the land was already the object of a choice between different uses. Later, drainage and irrigation works transformed parts of the district; since 2007 Riso di Baraggia Biellese e Vercellese has been PDO.

Chapter 3 of 3

Reading a piece of land

Heath and paddies belong to distinct landscapes, which should not be confused, but they help to read the same long relationship between communities and soil. An isolated oak, the edge of a wood or a field can keep traces of decisions that changed the landscape around the houses. The best-known area on the Biella side is the Baraggione, in the municipalities of Candelo and Cossato.
